Three Must-Have Items For Your Backyard Wedding Reception

by Brianna Cole

Many people use their backyard as an event venue to host their wedding reception because it saves money. However, even backyard wedding receptions can get costly if your aren't careful. When you're throwing a budget-friendly backyard wedding reception, it's important to know where you can cut expenses and what you absolutely need. While it's fine to cut down on decorations or hire a friend as a DJ to save a few bucks, feel free to spend a little more money on these three must haves.

Pop Up Canopy

You can't host an outdoor event without a pop-up canopy. The canopy provides shelter from rain and a shaded area for guests if it's sunny outside. Unfortunately, it's also an item that people tend to cut when they are on a tight budget, because tent rental can get costly. But then what happens if there is too much sun or it rains? You don't want you wedding reception to be ruined because you don't have any shelter available for guests. So instead of eliminating the pop-up canopy completely, consider renting a smaller one. Sure, the bigger the tent, the more room your guests have to mingle, but you don't need to rent the largest pop up canopy available. You can save money by opting for a medium-sized pop-up canopy with enough space for all of your guests to gather underneath it if needed.

Dance Floor

People dance at wedding receptions, and dancing can be difficult if your heels are sinking into grass or gravel. So unless you have a surface that's sturdy and solid, such as a concrete patio, you should consider renting a dance floor. Ideally, the dance floor you rent should be able to hold all of your guests at once, but it isn't a necessity. You can save money by renting a smaller dance floor if your guests aren't avid dancers. Chances are, some people won't dance at all. You should rent a dance floor that fits under your pop-up canopy though. That way it's protected from any harsh weather. Additionally, consider renting the dance floor and the pop-up canopy from the same company. You may be able to get a discount.

Portable Restrooms

A lot of people don't think about renting portable bathrooms for their backyard wedding reception, but they do come in handy. Splurging a bit to rent a couple of port-a-potties keeps guests out of the house, and helps prevent long bathroom lines from forming.

When you're planning a backyard wedding reception on a tight budget, you have to know where to cut costs. That way, you can use some of the money that you saved to pay for some of the more expensive items that you need such as portable bathrooms, a pop-up canopy, and a temporary dance floor.

I also learned about the value of offering a product or service customers in your target area desire. For example, selling snow plows in Miami, Florida is probably not a great idea.
