When you live out of town, you generally can't connect to the municipal water lines. That means that you need to have a way to get water at your house. One way to do that is to have a well drilled on your property. However, getting a well isn't as easy as hiring a drilling company and pointing where you would like the well to be in your yard. There is a process that has to be followed so that the well is placed correctly and will last a long time.
Site Survey
The drilling company will have to come to look over your site. They will need to see the lay of the land and things that might affect your water quality, like where your driveway is, where the road is, and any other potential contaminant source. The drilling company may bring tools like ground penetrating radars. That looks like a large lawn mower with a monitor on it. The techs from the well drilling company will run the GPR over the area where they think the best chance of finding water is. That will let them discover if there is water there, how much area the water covers, and how deep the water is. They need to know how deep the water is so that they drill down to the proper depth.
Permits
Your well drilling company must go through your local government to get the proper permits to drill the well. Depending on your location, they may need to provide documentation as to why that particular area was chosen for the well and what kind of contamination sources are in the general area of your property.
Test Holes
The well drilling company may drill a small test hole when they have the permits. That will let them check to see if the water is at the level they thought it was. It can also let them test the water quality. You don't want to drill a full well only to discover that the water isn't as good as you thought. A test hole and a quick water quality check will take much less time to do and let you make other plans if there is a problem.
