When Vehicles Are Flooded

by Brianna Cole

When large areas flood, often as a result of a hurricane or other major storm, many vehicles suffer flood damage, often being totally destroyed. If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, you need to make certain that you take the proper precautions, including purchasing the right insurance policy. After the flood, you may be able to help reclaim your vehicle.

Precautions

One of the best things you can do to protect yourself from vehicle loss is to purchase the right insurance policy. If you choose comprehensive insurance, your vehicle should be covered for flood damage. Of course, you need to consult with your agent to make certain of your specific policy's provisions. Remember, simply having collision and/or liability insurance will not protect you if your car is covered by ten feet of water or swept away in a flooded street. Not surprisingly, many insurance companies will not sell you comprehensive vehicle insurance when a hurricane is already on the way, so do not wait for hurricane season to update your policy.

You cannot always be prepared for floods since some strike in a matter of minutes. If you know conditions are prime for a flood, take your vehicles to higher ground. Store them in a family member's driveway or garage until the danger is over.

Clean-Up

If your vehicle is damaged, file a claim as soon as possible. Although truly high floodwaters will probably total your car, you may be able to help salvage a less severely damaged vehicle. Experts warn that you should never try to start the vehicle because you risk damaging the engine even more. However, you can help your car dry out. First, you should disconnect the battery. Then find the high water mark and clean everything below it. Use a wet/dry vac to get rid of excess water to stop further corrosion and prevent the development of mold and mildew. You may also prevent more damage by checking the transmission fluid and oil. If water is on the dipsticks, you should change the fluids. This step is especially necessary if the adjuster can't look at your car for several days.

You can prepare for vehicle flood damage. Your agent, someone from a place like Metropolitan Insurance Service Consultants, can best advise you on what coverage you need to be safe. Afterwards, you can help preserve your car or truck by starting the cleaning process, provided it hasn't been totaled.

During the completion of this assignment, I researched ways to make a new business successful. I discovered that implementing marketing strategies is crucial. I also learned about the value of offering a product or service customers in your target area desire. For example, selling snow plows in Miami, Florida is probably not a great idea. On this blog, I hope you will discover some ingenious tips to help you become a successful entrepreneur.
