A Quick Overview Of The Five Main Types Of Cranes

#1 Straddle Crane

This type of crane is generally used for moving large shipping containers. The crane connects to the shipping containers via a lifting point in the middle of the container, and it has handles on either side that grip around the container. 

Straddle cranes tend to be either mounted or traveling types of cranes, and they are most often found in shipping yards and ports. 

#2 Electric Hoist

An electric hoist tends to be a type of crane that is mounted and semi-permanent. These types of cranes can be used to move small and large sized loads using either a lift wheel or drum that moves either chains or ropes to lift objects up and down. 

#3 Marine Cranes

Like the name implies, marine cranes are usually found in ports on on large ocean vessels. These types of cranes are specifically designed to move boats from the shore to the water or move small boats off a larger ocean vessel into the water.  Marine cranes come in a variety of sizes and can be used to move very small to extremely large boats into and out of the water, depending on the size of the crane.

#4 Tower Crane

Tower cranes are the type of cranes that you most often see on construction sites. These types of cranes can be extremely tall and are used to lift a variety of construction tools, such as steel and concrete, onto the upper stories of tall construction jobs. Tower cranes come in a variety of different heights for different types of major construction work.

#5 Mobile Crane

Another type of crane often used in the construction business is the mobile crane. This type of crane is great because, as the name implies, it can easily be moved from one work site to another. These types of cranes are most often used for roadside construction projects, such as building highways and bridges. Mobile cranes are also used for building large retail and commercial properties as well.
