Allergic To Red Meat: Understanding Alpha-Gal Syndrome

by Brianna Cole

Alpha-gal syndrome may be one of the most unknown and unheard of conditions in the world. In fact, the condition only erupts in very specific circumstances, but the result is a food allergy to red meat. It may also be one of the strangest syndromes you have ever heard of.

What Causes Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-gal syndrome starts when a Lone Star tick transmits alpha-gal to a person. Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule. For many people, alpha-gal prompts an allergic reaction to meats. Unfortunately, you may not even realize you have the condition until you experience an allergic reaction.

Since the Lone Star tick is the predominant cause of this condition, most people who contract it spend time where these ticks do. You will find the Lone Star tick in the southeastern region of the United States. Keep in mind that these insects do spread quickly, especially because they hitchhike on wildlife. In other parts of the world, other types of ticks may carry the same molecules that cause this condition as well.

What Can You Do About Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for alpha-gal syndrome. The best thing you can do during this time is to avoid red meats so that you can avoid having a reaction to it.

The best way to prevent alpha-gal syndrome, in general, is to avoid getting bit by ticks and other insects. You can prevent tick bites by wearing long sleeves and long pants when you are outside, especially in tall grass. You should also check for ticks when you come in from outside to prevent bites and feeding as much as possible.

How Do You Know You Have Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

There are many things that can tell you that you have alpha-gal syndrome. Some people experience common flu and cold symptoms, like sneezing and headaches. Others may experience anaphylaxis, which can be deadly if your breathing is restricted. The signs could include itchy skin, hives, swelling throughout the body, and even abdominal pain or diarrhea. You may not even realize the symptoms come after you eat some sort of red meat.

What Should You Do If You See the Signs?

If you see the signs of alpha-gal syndrome, you should speak with a medical professional. You could also be presenting the symptoms due to other conditions, or your bite may have left you with other health matters to sort through. This is something you should seek to handle as soon as possible.

I also learned about the value of offering a product or service customers in your target area desire. For example, selling snow plows in Miami, Florida is probably not a great idea.
